Caring for Your Shearling Garments

A well-made shearling garment is naturally durable and easy to care for - in fact, it should only get better looking over the course of its lifetime. Here are a few simple steps you can take to make sure that it does:

During the initial wearing of a shearling garment, you may experience some slight shedding. This is called "crocking", and is evidence of the fine buffing each skin receives during production to achieve its characteristic smooth, silky hand. It is suggested that similar coloured clothing be worn at this time. After wearing a few times, this natural shedding will virtually be eliminated

During storage hang your garment on a broad shouldered hanger to prevent stretching. Store your shearling in a cool dry place and cover with a cloth garment bag, never a plastic one, to protect it from dust.

If your shearling gets wet, air dry it naturally. Rain spots can be removed by letting the coat dry, then brushing it thoroughly with a rubber 'sprush brush'. If you get caught in a sudden downpour & can find shelter we recommend you turn your shearling fur side out as the fur has good rain repelling qualities. When home hang in the coat and let air dry.

Please note if you have ever seen or owned a traditional sheepskin coat or sheepskin jacket, please be aware that our shearling coats have very little similarities to them. Sheepskin coats & jackets are made from old sheep whose skins are very stiff & have course hair that become matted incredibly quickly. The comparison would be High Street clothes compared, to top designer clothes, there is no comparison. Designer Italy’s garments actually become even more comfortable the more you wear, as they become softer & mould to your body shape without stretching.
